a lot of people are asking for sage, but it hasn't been added due to
- wishing to streamline and simplify the experience
- hiding site activity
- having the potential to be used in mean ways
- probably more
so I got an idea. what if there was a sage option that only bumped the thread just a little bit? i don't know how vichan stores the bump order in the database, but if its stored as a date, then you could do something like bump the thread by a couple hours or so. that way, it will appear below messages posted more recently, but appear above some older threads.
two ways to go about it, you could set the bump date to the current time minus offset, or the original bump date plus offset. don't know which would be better, but both could work
i think it would be a nice compromise!

adding onto this thought - in situations like this, it's really better to just let users respond first, as things will often de-escalate and any overly mean behavior can be discouraged that way, without need for intervention. so I regret reaching for the mod hammer; it was far too early.
>>225
>u want me to fear u marzimin & marzimods?
hope this doesn't scare you off! :^p
we're learning as we go m(_ _)m
This is a good example of how it's impractical to change the overall level of hostility in a social environment, you're just shifting it around and disguising it as something else. Even if you didn't ban him, a warning or the threat of intervention is equally stifling just more disguised. What you want is impossible, what you're getting by striving to achieve the impossible is increasingly verbose copes for why being politely, indirectly, or secretly hostile to others is necessary. I hope this post isn't interpreted as hostile because I'm not emotionally invested
>>228
hmm, I don't know about that.
maybe that's true if you're talking about a fixed group of people whose behavior doesn't change much. if those people want to be hostile, and you hold intervention over their head, I can see the argument that the hostility has just changed shape (become "secret" or "indirect", perhaps, like you say).

but in this context, I don't think the main purpose of moderation is to change how individual people will act. certainly there are some people like that - people who maybe had the wrong initial approach, but when prompted can "switch modes" and engage with the space in a positive way without feeling cramped.

but I reckon for the most part, the role of moderation in "steering" the environment is to warn or remove users who seem to be a bad fit; i.e., people who will consistently bring in hostility, antagonism, meanness, et cetera. and I'd argue you can definitely change the level of hostility in an environment by controlling who is in that environment.
>>229
Warning and removing users is also a form of hostility even if well-intentioned, and its indirect effects can be compared to the effects of the overtly hostile and antagonistic culture seen on typical imageboards. People won't feel free to fully express themselves or take pride in this expression if they might be banned for negativity or using rude words (or in the case of 4chan, suffer mockery or get their thread derailed).

You can't win here if your goal is to create a uniquely non-hostile space. Most overmoderated fandom spaces with similar intentions are about as welcoming as 4chan, just with different permitted speech and enforcement mechanisms. I think removing people who don't align with the goals of a community is important, but the goals of this community aren't coherent.

By attempting to steer the environment in a seemingly "less hostile" direction, you're only policing overt hostility which directly requires passive-aggression and exclusionary social behaviour via moderation actions, and also selects for/incentivises the same type of behaviour from users. The message you're sending isn't "be nice", it's "don't make your malice too obvious". If you've ever tried to edit Wikipedia and had a dispute with another user this will make perfect sense but you probably don't accept my argument, whatever that's all I have

No more boards!
>>23
Cool!

I’m kinda team 1 board ngl. Also might not come back some time, that’s how it’s been for me with most altchans, I post a lil and like it but eventually get distracted.
yeah it doesn't really make sense to have new boards when there aren't enough people to populate them...
you can talk about any of ur interests in the main board!!! and if it somehow becomes super popular and loads of people start talking about it then maybe it would need a board of its own. but that sounds like something that would take a whiiilllleee >.<

This is me. Literally me. No other character can come close to relating to me like this. There is no way you can convince me this is not me. This character could not possibly be anymore me. It's me, and nobody can convince me otherwise. If anyone approached me on the topic of this not possibly being me, then I immediately shut them down with overwhelming evidence that this character is me. This character is me, it is indisputable. Why anyone would try to argue that this character is not me is beyond me. If you held two pictures of me and this character side by side, you'd see no difference. I can safely look at this character every day and say "Yup, that's me". I can practically see this character every time I look at myself in the mirror. I go outside and people stop me to comment how similar I look and act to this character. I chuckle softly as I'm assured everyday this character is me in every way. I can smile each time I get out of bed every morning knowing that I've found my identity with this character and I know my place in this world. It's really quite funny how similar this character is to me, it's almost like we're identical twins. When I first saw this character, I had an existential crisis. What if this character was the real me and I was the fictional being. What if this character actual became aware of my existence? Did this character have the ability to become self aware itself?

what font is used by marzichan?
the "arzichan" portion is bold-italic "rasa", and the "M" is a modified copy of the bold-italic capital M from "vollkorn".
took me a while to dig up the font I used for the M again!

after staring at the site's colors for a long while, I realized I really wanted higher contrast between the replies and the background, to give them that nice, blocky post-it note look.

the reply boxes are already quite dark, so I decided to lighten the background considerably. it's quite jarring at first, but I think the rest of the elements really pop now, and they help keep the site looking purple. I also darkened the reply drop shadows for the same reason.

let me know what you think!

picrel is the OLD color scheme for comparison

these current colors will definitely stick around as the default theme, though I may make slight adjustments while porting it over
you should add a dark theme of sorts. the default theme is cute, but light colors strain the eyes after awhile.
>>192
yup, it's one of the planned additions either as part of or immediately after the new version of the site. sorry for the wait (^^;)
>>193
np, though i hope "new version" doesnt mean a departure from imageboard. they can be tedious, but imageboards are the best form of communication.
>>194
nope, don't worry! it's still going to be an imageboard, just one that's more secure, has nicer UI, some new features, etc.
it won't be a radical departure from what we have now, just a more polished version :)
I am also planning to make an effort to migrate over existing posts when the time comes

what vichan js extensions & themes are you using?

also options.js is giving me on my own instance "Uncaught TypeError: options_current_tab is undefined", do you know how to fix that?

>js extensions
if you use your browser's dev tools, you can see the full list of js files being used (picrel)
>themes
I think the news page might be the only one I'm using out of the box. the homepage is a modified copy of "recent posts", I think I made some slight tweaks to the catalog page, and the banner gallery I made myself.

>do you know how to fix that?
maybe you don't have any options tabs configured? try checking if you have js/options/general.js added to your array of enabled js; that file adds a tab and some basic settings

that fixed it, thank you so much! :D

glad I could help! have fun with your site :)

sorry for the downtime just now...
updating vichan is a real pain because of all the hacky changes I had to make to get this site looking just the way I wanted. just spent the last couple hours fixing issues post-update, but I'm hungry and tired, so I'm setting it aside for now. reverted back to the pre-update version

the faq and rules pages used to mention that users are encouraged to post anonymously, to build community spirit. I was thinking on it, and I've removed both of these instances.

I think it's true that anonymous posting does create a unique sort of community experience, but at the same time, one of marzichan's key goals is to foster connection, and anonymity tends to make such opportunities for connection much more fleeting and rare. I don't want users to feel compelled by the site to post anonymously when that could deprive them of the opportunity to be recognized and make new friends, so please - feel free to use names and trips to your heart's content :)

of course, there's nothing wrong with choosing to post anonymously either, and since this is an imageboard, I'm guessing most users will still choose to post that way most of the time. but there should be no shame in posting with a name or trip here if you'd like to.

as always, feedback is welcome m(_ _)m

I slightly changed the syntax for post formatting.
italics is now two asterisks (previously one), and
bold is now three asterisks (previously two)

it's something I want to be pretty stable, but it annoyed me a little that you couldn't do single asterisk wraps for things like *punches you*
